I can’t tell you the number of discovery calls I’ve had with single women who lead with, “I have spoken with numerous adoption professionals, and they’ve told me that expectant mothers aren’t choosing single women,” or “We don’t work with single women due to our religious beliefs,” and many other discouraging reasons. I am here to dispel the myth: single women do adopt, and they are doing so with strength, love, and determination.
While there may still be misconceptions about single women adopting, the truth is clear: nearly 28.2% of adoptions in the U.S. are by single parents, the majority being women. A loving, stable home doesn't require two parents—just one dedicated individual who is ready to provide care, support, and love.
Single women are stepping up and challenging outdated beliefs, proving that they have everything it takes to become incredible mothers, no matter the hurdles placed in their way.
Debunking Adoption Myths for Single Women
It’s common for single women to hear myths about their ability to adopt, but let’s break down the most persistent misconceptions:
Myth 1: Expectant mothers won’t choose single women.
Truth: Many expectant mothers choose single women because they see strength, stability, and love in these women. Single women are often able to form deep connections with expectant mothers who appreciate their commitment.
Myth 2: It’s harder for single women to adopt.
Truth: While some agencies may have outdated views, many are eager to work with single women who bring their unique strengths to parenting. Finding the right adoption professional who supports your journey is key. Single or not, finding the right adoption professional is literally life changing.
Myth 3: You need a partner to be a great parent.
Truth: Parenting isn’t defined by the number of people in the household; it’s defined by love, dedication, and consistency. Many single women have built nurturing, happy homes for their children. The single women that I have met are hardworking, dedicated, determined and education. They are kicking ass all by themselves.
Single moms you will find your tribe! Adoption is rarely a 100% solo journey, and many single women find incredible strength in their communities. Whether through adoption networks, social media groups, or local resources, connecting with other single adoptive moms can make a world of difference. These communities offer advice, encouragement, and a shared sense of understanding that helps women navigate the ups and downs of adoption. And let’s not forget family and friends.
